Bi-Annual CYD Tahoe Trip

November 9th Seven Mira Loma Young Democrats took a car ride up to Lake Tahoe. These young democrats were Alexandra Johnson, Marisa Galvez, Melanie Gill, Niko Perez, Connor O’Farrell, Irina Geletyuk, and Aisha Ali.

We all made it up to our cabin #460 and settled in. it was only friday night and already the fun was beginning. Alexandra Johnson and Marisa Galvez attended a California Young Democrats Executive Board Meeting for a rigorous 2 hours doing everything from officer reports to voting on whether or not to endorse several propositions.

Later that evening severel very helpful fellow CYD members such as Amanda Levy came over and handed MLYD a karaoke machine and some pizzas. We also discovered that we were not the only High School Young Democrats in the resort. We had the pleasure of meeting the riverside county young democrats who were composed of 3 seperate high schools. We all played UNO, ate pizza, sang, and got to know each other until curfew was up.

On Saturday morning we ate breakfast together and soon dispersed to our assigned workshops. Irina, Connor, and Aisha attended track one for those who had never been to CYD events before. Marisa, Melanie and Niko attended Track 2 for those who had been to CYD events before and were already very involved. While Alexandra Johnson attended Track 3 for chapter presidents.

All of these tracks included information on the widespread program Peer-to-Peer as well as information such as fundraising and leadership skills.

Afterwards Mira Loma Young Democrats attended a chapter clinic in their cabin run by Tim Steed the President of CYD in order to improve their club. They tediously worked on pro’s and cons, fundraising ideas, and a calendar for the coming year. Spending the combination of 3 hours on this tired them out, so they took a recreational trip to the souviner shops having a break from the business side of tahoe.

Later that evening they attended a banquet where they enjoyed chicken, eggplant, and dessert while listening to the intense speeches of those such as Tim Steed, Charlie Brown, and Alex Roker.

Sunday morning soon came and so did the last seminar, some went to Working in Politics in the administrators cabin while some attended The National Scene seminar in the main lodge. Afterwards there were many farewells and pictures on the pier, as well as numerous goodbyes and promises to stay in touch with everyone.

Also, check out the picture gallery. I put up the pictures from the findraiser lastweek. Finally, I also put up the new edition of the Democratic Newspaper, so if you haven’t got a chance to read it yet, then read it from the comfort of your own computer chair.

ML Young Democrats Fundraiser

Filed under: Events — by President @ 4:53 pm

Come to the first politcal fundraiser held by a High School Young Democrats club!

Tickets are $9 for members and their immidate families, or $15 for others.

The event will be at the Godfather’s Pizza (a small business) on Wednesday, January 25th, starting at 6:30pm. which is at 6716 Madison Ave, Suite #5. near Dewey, which is behind the Adalbertos. There will be an all-you-can-eat pizza buffet, which includes pizza, salad, dessert pizza, breadsticks, a soda fountain, and more. The $15 tickets also include a free drink ticket for a mug of your choice of the beer on tap, or a glass of wine.

At the event we will be having a number of guest speakers and important Democrats in attendance. People are being added daily, but as of right now (1/11) here are the guest speakers:

Crystal Strait (President of the California Young Democrats)

Larry Miles (President of the San Juan Unified School Board)

Lt. Colonel Charlie Brown (Congressional Candidate in the 4th District)

This list will be growing… so keep looking back.

Democrats from all around Sacramento will be attending this event, so there could be a few surprises.

We will also be having a raffle for a number of items, which have not been selected, and later in the evening, Karaoke! This is going to be a great time, so bring your whole family. Stay tuned to the website for updates on the prizes and guest speakers.

Sponsorships are also available at the $100, $150, and $250 levels. I want to specially thank Mighty Matador Owen Jackman, a great friend of Mira Loma, for being the first sponsor. Owen is a middle school teacher in the Sacramento City School District. Also, a huge thanks to the Treasurer of the Sacramento Central Committee, a Mega Matador sponsor, Virginia Moose, and to our great friend, Finance Director of the CDP Assembly Democratic Caucus, a Mega Matador sponsor, Dan Weitzman. Also, thanks to our great friend, a Mighty Matador sponsor, Robbie Abelon, who is our boy from Sacramento State, and the Northern California Rep for the California College Democrats. Thanks to our friend Sacramento City Councilmember Ray Tretheway, a Mighty Matador sponsor, and his staff, and a great thanks to our friends and first Mighty Mega Matador sponsor, the Stonewall Democratic Club of Greater Sacramento! Check out their website at www.sacstonewall.org. Thanks so much.

A special thanks to the next Lt. Governor of California, Insurance Commissioner John Garamendi, a Mighty Mega Matador sponsor, for his support of our club and for all the great work he does for the people of California. Visit his campaign website at http://www.garamendi.org/ and get involved!

Buy tickets at school in room F-3 from Mr. Carson, or contact Eddie Kirby by email: edesw88@aol.com

The money from the fundraiser will be going to a number of things, such as, expanding our school newspaper, further funding our website (www.mlyd.org), and the production of a banner and posters. Another huge goal is to make sure that our club is able to subsidize trips to CYD and CDP events. Finally, next month we are going to start a voter registration drive, in which our members go to apartment complexes and register voters, and in order to make that possible, I am going to need to be able to help pay for gas, as this would basically be mobile voter registration.
